Craven Community College (Craven CC) will host its fourth annual Community Day on the Havelock Campus with an array of fun, family-oriented games and activities for the public to enjoy. Sponsored by the Havelock Campus Student Services department, this free event will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 13.

The concept behind Community Day started with the college’s annual Open House hosted on the New Bern Campus, and it was expanded to become more family- and community-oriented. The event gives Craven CC a chance to thank the community for its support while offering an enjoyable way to explore all the programs and possibilities available at the college.

“The main purpose of this event is providing an opportunity for the community and the college to come together for a few hours,” said Wally Calabrese, Craven CC dean of the Havelock campus. “Local businesses get an opportunity to be here, and we get an opportunity to highlight all of what Craven can offer to the community.”

Those in attendance can enjoy an abundance of entertainment such as live music by Beaufort-based band Nüttbrëd, martial arts demonstrations, face painting, free haircuts from the barbering program, Science Olympiad, educational open house, displays by Fire and Rescue, corn hole, carnival games with prizes and numerous children’s activities. Carnival food will also be available during the event.

The college will have advisors on hand to answer questions, and several local organizations will be present to share information.

Academic, financial aid and VA advisors will be available to answer general questions regarding services available at Craven CC’s Havelock campus. They will also provide assistance for anyone interested in filling out a Craven CC application, filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and finding scholarships. Students with a Craven CC student ID will qualify for giveaways.

“Many people are not aware of the financial aid process, the admissions process or even the programs that we have here at Havelock and the main campus,” said Calabrese. “Examples are Career and College Promise, Aviation Technologies, Welding, student clubs, various degrees in Career Programs and several offerings in Workforce Development.”

The event is open to the public and will have an assortment of family-friendly activities.

Area businesses, nonprofit agencies, a soccer league and many others will be on campus to share information about their organizations. This is the perfect time to learn about the college and all the helpful resources in the City of Havelock, Havelock Chamber, Havelock Public Library, Havelock Parks and Recreation, Havelock Police Department, City of Havelock Fire – Rescue Department, Craven CC Student Government Association, Early College EAST and NC State Engineering at Craven CC.

“We typically have around 150-200 folks on campus, which is huge for us,” said Calabrese. “It’s nice to simply get to know our neighbors and find out what we can do for them.”
